Casten Statement on Continuing Resolution Until March 2025
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) has released the following statement regarding the continuing resolution passed by the House to keep the government open:
“Keeping our government open is one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress. Government funding should have been sorted out before the start of the 2025 fiscal year, but unfortunately, Speaker Mike Johnson proved incapable of doing this.
“When it became clear a full government funding package was not within reach, Democratic and Republican leadership engaged in negotiations and reached a strong, bipartisan agreement to keep our government open. Unfortunately, Elon Musk killed this deal, and President-elect Donald Trump followed his lead.
“Shutting the government down would have devastating consequences for Illinois. American troops, single mothers and their children, veterans, travelers, and more would have felt the impact. We have kicked the can down the road to avoid this, passing a continuing resolution to keep our government open until mid-March.
“I’m proud that House Democrats have once again stepped up and provided the necessary votes to keep the government open even when our Republican counterparts refused to do the same. The House must continue working to pass a full government funding package for FY2025 that addresses the needs of the American people.”
